Mt. Hollywood Drive-Fewer Vehicles More Passive Recreation
By Jack Conrad
I am a former friend of Griffith Park, having been attracted to your organization by the rodenticide program (I helped to get Decon off the shelves of my local market) and being driven away by your opposition to getting some relief for the tourist woes in Beachwood Canyon.
All the ills you ascribe to traffic access in the park were visited upon us, a small residential canyon without any of the resources available to the park. You have a large parking area in Ferndell from which to run a shuttle system…we have no parking. You have a staff of rangers…we have little if any regulation on our streets. We are in a high risk fire area with lots of smokers…and frankly any fire that starts in the park is going to affect us too…has done in the past. (God bless the LAFD!)
Trash, human waste, smoking and gridlock traffic disrupting our once quiet place to live led us to appeal to that well know idiot, Tom LaBonge for some relief. I note that at many meetings I attended someone from FOGP would get up and oppose any ideas that involved the park helping to ameliorate our dilemma.
The thing is…the promotion of a trailhead into the park from Beachwood is what got this all going. LaBonge promoted the park into it’s overuse…both Beachwood Canyon and GP are victims of his shortsighted deeds.
Now that the Hollywood Sign has been identified as the number one terrorist target in Los Angeles (yes folks the buildings and tower next door are a significant target…look it up) I would hope that we could work towards a manageable solution to our shared problem.
That huge parking lot on Ferndell that was built for Observatory buses is still sitting empty most of the time. What a great place to run shuttles! They could go all the way to the fire road that accesses the Hollywood Sign before turning around with intermediate stops along the way.
Cheers, JC
