The Los Angeles Stone Company, Los Angeles, California c. 1907
Quarrying of rock was begun by the Los Angeles Stone Company at the end of Canyon Drive. The rock was used for construction of the “Red Cars” trolley lines, streets, and home construction (including the portals at the entrance of Hollywoodland at the bifurcation of Beachwood Drive.
A year later, railroad tracks were laid to service the quarry. The “Brush Canyon Line” branched from the trolley tracks on Franklin Ave and went 1.56 miles north on Bronson and the Canyon Drive. Another 0.95 miles of track extended into the quarry site. In addition to the trains of wooden gondola cars filled with gravel, one report dated 1913 said that a single shuttle car ran every 30 minutes between 6 am and 11 pm connected with the Franklin Avenue trolley cars (presumably primarily used by quarry workers.) The line was abandoned in 1918.
